Carrer de Sant Joan, 3, 07012 Palma, Illes Balears, Palma, Mallorca, m
Opened in spring 2014, Koa is opposite Forn de Sant Joan in La Lonja, Palma de Mallorca and has the same owners, Carlos and Christian Baques. The charming brothers also own Ombú in Plaza Reina.
The Hawaiian island of Maui inspired the concept for the grill and cocktail bar (Koa is a Hawaiian word).
The award-winning Pedro Scattarella designed the interior, creating a relaxed environment for an enjoyable evening out.
Koa’s well-priced cuisine is best described as fusion. Tapas double as starters and, like Forn de Sant Joan’s, are on a different culinary level to tapas found in other nearby establishments.
From the main course grill section of six dishes, we enjoyed the tasty Nebraska rib-eye steak.
In addition to the grill, there are a few other meat dishes (including baby goat), and three fish dishes – including a flavourful salmon fillet with yuzuyuzu-miso sauce and teriyaki vegetables. Sides include roasted sweet potatoes and rustic mash. The pizzas are generous in size, with a good base, and tasty topping combinations you probably won’t have tried before.
Mallorcan wines and an international selection are offered, by the bottle or by glass. Service here is slick, but friendly, with smartly dressed servers.
