Britten’s 6 Metamorphoses after Ovid was written in 1951, midway through humanity’s most turbulent century and at the end of the Second World War when the will to transform at a political, societal and psychological level was being felt most urgently. This evocative work for solo oboe punctuates a programme of music and literature related to the theme of metamorphosis; ranging from the transcriptions of J.S. Bach via Debussy and Philip Glass, to the words of William Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll and Angela Carter.
